This piece is a memorial to my grandmother. Every year for my birthday she would make me a doll cake. She would call me on the phone and ask me what kinds of flavors and decoration colors I would like to have. I loved seeing my ideas come to life in this very special cake. In the early years my mother and grandmother always made birthdays very special. I knew the day was all for me. From having all my friends there, to games, presents and cake, I was the center of attention. This ceramic cake was created to symbolize the gift of attention that made me feel important and recognized in the world.

I made the cake overly large, four times the size of the actual cake; this speaks of how large it was to me as a child and its importance. It stands about two and a half feet tall. The doll is transforming into a white rabbit, which is a mythological symbol for good magic. With this magic, snails have been summoned to decorate the cake. Having animals involved in the process points towards a mythology I am setting up for the viewer. When I was making the piece I was thinking about children’s stories like Cinderella where animals have come to her rescue to help her in her dilemma. The doll’s arms hang detached from her body to give the effect that she is not completely alive. I like to play with the ideas of things that are not alive but seem to be coming to life. The cake stands three feet tall and is glazed in a pink slick frosting with white raised piping underneath. The snails are a crumbling bright yellow-green. Their tails are attached to the piping as if they have been the ones decorating the cake.
